The Ashmond Police didn't really own a SWAT team primed
for breaching a residence especially in a situation where a child might be held
hostage. They did have a negotiator on
staff, but as luck would have it, Tompkins was out of state, in Wisconsin, participating
in a hostage negotiators conference. His
backup, Perkins, was en route from his home, in county, but 12 miles south of
Ashmond, driving like all get out on the Ponderosa highway through the wheat
fields, but still mindful of a certain section of poison at the mouth of the highway
switchback, titled Bambi's Black Hole, infamous as far east as Pullman for
holding the suicidal deer crossing title three generations and counting.
